  • Way Ahead takes beginners (or those who have followed a pre-school course) up to intermediate level.
  • Each Pupil’s Book provides the basis for 100 lessons per year in 20 units (4 language lessons and 1 Reading for Pleasure section per week). The units are thematic and every 5th unit is for revision.

Structures and functions are taught through a variety of imaginative and inviting child-centred activities, which have been carefully graded and are suitable for classes in a variety of cultural backgrounds.

  • teachers who are starting Way Ahead 1 with absolute beginners
  • teachers with false beginners (who have already studied English at kindergarten level) who wish to run quickly through any material they think children might have forgotten (saying sounds of letters of the alphabet as well as writing small letters, numbers 1-10 and colours)

General progression of units

In order to download the PDF scope and sequence worksheets, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader which is available free at the following site: www.adobe.com

Levels 1 and 2
Levels 3 and 4
Levels 5 and 6

Levels 1 and 2 begin with a presentation of new vocabulary and structures within the context of a suitable theme. Following the introductory texts, practice in the form of task-based exercises leads gradually to freer practice.
Examples of the main grammar structures appear on Noticeboards which usually occur in the second lesson of each unit. Particular attention is paid to developing the skills of reading, speaking and listening in the Pupil’s Book and writing in the Workbook . Most units include games, songs or rhymes, which encourage active participation by all pupils. Reading for Pleasure pages on the fifth page of the unit are often supplemented at the earlier levels by cut-outs or paper crafts so children can re-tell or act out the reading passages.

Scope and sequence: Level 1  Level 2

Levels 3 and 4 follow the same pattern of presentation as the previous levels. However, particular attention is paid to either reading or listening in the form of a picture page, often with photographs of real children, people and places. Noticeboards occur in pages 3 or 4 of most units, with the addition of a ‘grammar gang’ who name, break down and demonstrate the grammar structures at a very basic level. Dialogues, games and task-based exercises encourage speaking practice, and writing as a skill is covered as ‘Composition’ in the Workbook.

Scope and sequence: Level 3  Level 4

Levels 5 and 6 move away from the development of running characters to more informative texts, still presented in an interesting and lively way, with detailed and colourful illustrations. Longer reading passages with a full page of exercises alternate with two-page Reading for Pleasure sections. Grammar structures with practical hints are presented on Grammar Cards, which can be copied by students to make their own grammar files. The emphasis on development of all skills continues with freer speaking practice and intensive listening exercises. Writing and study skills practice continues in the Workbooks.

Scope and sequence: Level 5  Level 6
