The Pupil's Books

The Pupil’s Books consist of 20 units with four lessons in each unit. The fifth page in each unit is an extended reading passage ‘Reading for Pleasure’. All the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking are dealt with systematically and all new language is regularly recycled and revised.

Reading for Pleasure

These pages occur at the end of every unit. They include stories, poems and informative texts which can be read and enjoyed by children without understanding every word. Illustrations are designed to be both entertaining and useful in promoting understanding. The Teacher’s Resource Book has patterns for paper crafts for several of these pages at the earlier levels. These will allow children to retell or act out the stories. By levels 5 and 6 these pages include serial stories as well as two-page entries in every other unit. The Reading for Pleasure pages will encourage children to find enjoyment in reading. For this reason, no exercises of any kind accompany these pages.

Noticeboards

Children first meet Noticeboards at levels 1 and 2, where the puppets Otto and Princess present an activity which highlights the main language point being taught. When children have done the related exercise or activity in their books, the teacher can create a similar activity on a classroom noticeboard, to which children can contribute in an active way.

At levels 3 and 4, Noticeboards have a more obvious grammar focus, with the addition of a ‘grammar gang’ of workmen who carry the name of the focus structure on their lorry and unload signs which show how it is formed and used. Once again, children do the related exercise or activity in the book and can then construct a classroom noticeboard themselves.

At levels 5 and 6 the noticeboard is replaced by a series of Grammar Cards, which name and break down the focus structure and give practical hints as well as examples. Children are encouraged to build their own grammar card files.

Grammar Cards

Grammar file cards are a feature of Way Ahead 5 and 6. The main grammar point of each unit is summarised on a grammar file card in the Pupil’s Book. Children reproduce these grammar file cards and add their own examples. The cards can be stored in a folder and can be used for reference as required.
