Weblinks - Book One

http://www.learningplanet.com/act/fl/aact/aact.htm
Here, students can hear the pronunciation of the letters of the alphabet and practise letter recognition. The site also provides alphabet colouring pages which can be printed and used to make a class display.

The alphabet
http://www.edu4kids.com/alpha/
This site contains some very useful matching activities which are good for practising the English alphabet. The games themselves are easy to follow but the instructions appear to be quite complicated. Explanation in L1 would easily remedy this.

Numbers
http://www.learningplanet.com/sam/cyc/cyc.htm
Students can practice counting here, with the added benefit of hearing the numbers when they answer the questions correctly. There are fun, animated pictures which will hold the students’ interest and there is also interactive help if required.

Colours
http://www.literacycenter.net/lessonview_en.htm#
On this site, students can practise spelling the names of the colours. The words are then spoken, so students receive name recognition in addition to pronunciation practice.

http://www.EnchantedLearning.com/subjects/plants/Seasonsprintout.shtml
This is a fun colouring activity which can be downloaded, printed and used in class. Students need to read instructions and colour in pictures.

What’s this? Identifying objects
http://www.dole5aday.com/MusicAndPlay/Play/P_CrayolaDraw.jsp UPDATED JULY 2004
This is a site in which students can colour in fruit and vegetables. This is a good time to remind students of the names of colours and fruits.

How many? – singular & plural
http://www.syvum.com/cgi/online/serve.cgi/english/english1/onemany1.tdf
This site provides lots of fun activities to practise lots of different skills including alphabet recognition, a and an, plural ‘s’ / ‘es’, numbers, days of the week, and so on. The worksheets are not downloadable, but the site provides an online marking and answer scheme, so students can get immediate results.

Clothing
http://www.free.thebigbus.com/thezone/actinfo.html#/ UPDATED JULY 2004
Here students can dress a teddy bear by clicking on various items of clothing. It provides good practice for learning the names of clothes.

Describing people
http://www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/Fountain/2131/clowningardescrip.html
This is a really fun activity which can be used with the whole class. The instructions are easy to follow and students will enjoy playing the clown game. In addition, the game practises describing people, numbers, colours and parts of the body.

Zoo animals
http://www.learningplanet.com/act/ws/e_ws.htm?e_zoo
This is a fun, interactive wordsearch which recycles the names of zoo animals. The activity is quite short, so could be well used at the end of a lesson on zoo animals. (There are also lots of other wordsearches on this site.)

Describing animals
http://www5.funbrain.com/cgi-bin/vo.cgi?A1=s&A2=anim UPDATED JULY 2004
On this site, students may encounter some new animals, so their answers may involve some guesswork. However, the site provides good practice for recognising names of animals and will also teach students some new ones, with pictures.

Dictionary
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/Dictionary.html
This is a fun online dictionary which students can browse through in their own time. They simply click on a letter and numerous entries, all with pictures, appear. The site is good for both consolidating already-learnt vocabulary, and also for learning new words. In addition, there is an ‘Animal Printouts’ section which provides hundreds of downloadable colouring pages for students to enjoy.
