Ibn Buttuta and Arab explorers

This is a very informative site about the world’s famous explorers. It provides details of their journeys and adventures, maps of the their routes and articles about the different countries they visited. There is ample material here for a class project or alternatively, the articles could easily be adapted to make an interesting reading comprehension to be done in class.

Here students can find out how to tell the time without using a clock or a watch. There are very informative articles, photographs and diagrams. In addition, there is a section which provides teachers with ideas for class projects.

Animal habitats

This is a lovely site created by a primary school in England. There are many useful articles about animal habitats, but in addition, there are sections of the site which are written by the school children themselves. The site includes very good photographs and diagrams. In addition, there is a long list of suggestions for teachers which include links to other useful sites and some interesting, cross-curricular teaching ideas.

Games from 100 years ago

On this site, students can compare their modern-day toys to those that children played with hundreds of years ago. The site provides information about the development of toys throughout history together with information about toys and games which students may or may not be familiar with and their inventors. One part of the site is dedicated to classroom activities and has many suggestions and downloadable material for teachers.

This site lists hundreds of games which children all over the world love to play. There are ideas for classroom games and activities.

Survival – mountain adventure

On this site, students become adventurers and have to put their survival techniques to the test. The site provides information about what problems they may encounter on their travels and how to overcome them. Overall, this is a fun site which students will enjoy.

Inventions

This is a great site for children. They are guided round the site by a fun, animated inventor who directs them to various games and activities. Overall, this is a really fun and informative site.

Students can learn about the invention of many things from the aspirin to the zip. There is a trivia quiz on the site, which students can complete online.

Making a T-shirt

This site has many fun experiments which can be done in the classroom. They are presented clearly and students will have no problem following the instructions. Note: some of the experiments will need adult supervision.

This site contains a great deal of information about traditional costumes, who they were worn by, how they were worn and the traditions related to them.

This site offers a different approach to Ancient Egypt. Students can play games about ancient inventions and do an Ancient Egypt quiz.

Here is a wonderful collection of articles, games and information about Ancient Egypt. The sites include a ‘staff room’ which helps guide teachers round the site and offers additional resources for class activities.

Aeroplanes (Wright Brothers)

This site is a ‘virtual museum covering the invention of the aeroplane’. It teaches students about the first flight and how air travel has improved since the early days.

Birds

This is a fun site which offers lots of information about how birds live, what they eat, when they hunt and so on. It is written in simple language, so students would be able to access it by themselves and discover some fascinating facts about birds. In addition, there is a set of printouts which can be coloured and used as a class display.

Easter Island

As in Egypt, Easter Island has huge, mysterious, stone structures. This site offers further information about these monoliths and includes a long list of teacher resources and additional notes about the Easter Island structures.

Volcanoes

This site offers clear diagrams depicting volcanoes and how they are formed. There are volcano printouts, a volcano quiz, a dictionary of ‘volcanic’ terms and a section on how to create a volcano in the classroom.
